What Is Bacteriostatic Water?

Water is essential, it is a majority of what our body is made up of and accounts for about 70% of our total body weight. The daily water requirement for an average adult is from two to three liters of water. Thus it is quite necessary for drugs that are administered to our bodies be diluted with water as it is what our bodies are most accustomed to.

Bacteriostatic water is a type of solution that contains 0.9 percent benzyl alcohol, this solution is used to dissolve or dilute medications. The container can be reentered as many times as needed, most commonly by a sterile needle, and the benzyl alcohol will do its job of suppressing or stopping the growth of harmful contaminating bacteria. Bacteriostatic water is widely available in various pharmacies and will usually have the same name companies such as hcg supplies sell bacteriostatic water. Bacteriostatic water is usually utilized as a dissolving or diluting agent for medications that are administered through intravenous, subcutaneous, or intramuscular injection. Bacteriostatic water is positively safe and have very few side effects, if any, in the event of side effects actually occuring, it is mainly due to other factors such as contamination or it could simply be the side effect of the drug mixed in with the bacteriostatic water and not as a side effect of the solution itself. The possibility of these side effects happening is close to zero, but the side effects include, venous thrombosis, abscess formation, tissue death, and infections.

Bacteriostatic water usually comes in 30 ml flip top plastic vials that are not pressurized. Bacteriostatic water should not be used for neonatal medicine due to its possible effect of blood pressure changes and the benzyl alcohol’s toxicity. Bacteriostatic water is not isotonic, which means it should never be injected intravenously without a diluted compound as it may cause red blood cell lysis. Bacteriostatic water works well with a lot of drugs though there are some drugs that are incompatible with the solution and will interact in an unfavorable manner.

Water balance is preserved by different regulatory systems. Water distribution is dependent on the concentration of electrolytes in the compartments of the body and sodium also plays a major role in maintaining equilibrium.

Water for injection, bacteriostatic water, is simply water that is chemically designated.

A special kind of polyolefin is the material that is used to make the vials that contain bacteriostatic water. This is a special copolymer of propylene and ethylene.
