So get your pencils and spreadsheets ready because we will be looking at how Porsche changed the very definition of luxury forever.
Form meets function.
The word of the day is Horological. This word simply means the study of time’s measurement.
Luxury car manufacturers like to work with watchmakers to manufacture watches that are inspired by cars. But Porsche is one of the few companies that seriously dived into horology.
They have completely reshaped the landscape of the watch industry. But how did they do something most establish brands could not? With their meticulous marriage of both function and form. This is the design philosophy of Bauhaus. And that any object’s form cannot be separated from the function and the other way around.
Ferdinand was not just satisfied with building only cars. He wanted to take his design skills to the next level.
He set out to follow his dreams, leaving his family’s business behind and started Porsche Design. And what is his first product you may ask? A simple wristwatch.
Nobody was wearing or even cared about black wrist watch way back in 1972. Ferdinand saw all the shiny gold or even some leather watches and he felt like something was lacking. His first creation was a booming success, it was a black steel and a bracelet.

He didn’t think of any fancy names. He called his wristwatch the Chronograph. The design was inspired by Airplane gauges.
You need to simply give an analogue watch a quick glance and instantly know what time of day it is. The black steel face along with the white markers gave a beautiful contrast that made this much easier.
The design was amazing and timeless. The watch stood the test of time and still looked just as fresh as it did 40 years ago as it does now!
